Beautiful Chaos: Final Collection
The second piece of the final collection consists of an outburst of colour and hand stitch to create an overwhelming and compactly embroidered piece, perfectly embodying the influences that make up this project. Due to changes in circumstances, a previous large-scale piece was reconstructed into this final piece that is suitable as a skirt or dress detail whilst also holding the capability of being increased in scale to be used as an alternative wedding dress train.
Due to the close proximity of many distinct sections of hand stitch, it was the most appropriate choice to plan this final piece during the making process so that each section could be carefully assessed and analysed before creating the next. Therefore, the production of this final piece is more unique than any other, due to the constant room for adaptation, perfectly encapsulating the circumstances that this piece was created under.
This final piece shows a more maximalist approach to the term ‘Beautiful Chaos’ where the visible front and the hidden back of the embroidery piece are more representational of a chaotic aesthetic. The contrast between the bold choices in thread colour impeccably complement the darkness of the cotton satin material, integrating together to create an audacious, expressive embroidery piece.
Many influences of the embroidery in this piece were drawn from the components of prominent symbols from the designer’s own culture where mythical creatures such as the dragon or phoenix from Chinese tradition and embroidery.
Due to the scale of this final piece, it can be potentially styled in many ways, one of which was explored in this project. The styling of this piece as a skirt allows for the fringing details to be put into full use as the details perfectly contrast the opaqueness of the compact embroidery. A horror-inspired approach was taken for the photographing of this piece, in order to relate the final collection back to the origins of the AW21/22 Phantasmagoria trend.
